Sodium Nitrate is a chemical compound which belongs to the class of alkali metal nitrates consisting of alkaline metals and nitrate ions. It physically appears as a white to colourless crystalline powder having a sweet odour and density of 2.257 grams per cubic centimetres. This inorganic compound is also known as Chile saltpetre. It is non-combustible in nature but helps to accelerate the burning of combustible materials. It can be used in the production of fertilizers, pottery enamels, pyrotechnics, smoke bombs, food preservatives and solid rocket propellant.
